What Causes Big Pores on My Nose and Cheeks and How Do I Shrink Them?

Enlarged pores are one of the most stubborn and difficult to treat skin problems.

Pores are essential for skin health allowing sweat and oil reach the skin’s surface, however a variety of causes can leave us with enlarged and unsightly pores especially around the nose and cheeks.

Genetics it runs in the family
Age as we age, we lose collagen in our skin, which leads to skin losing firmness and pores stretching out
Sun exposure UV damage causes loss of collagen
Skin Type Excess oils from naturally oily skin block pores and trap dead skin cells & dirt, making them even larger

Are they dangerous? No – while they leave skin looking bumpy, they generally do not cause medical problems, although they tend to collect excess oil which may make it harder to get rid of acne

How to treat them? (They can’t disappear completely, but there are ways to keep them at bay) Wash your face once or twice per day to remove the daily build up.

Gentle exfoliating 2-3 times per week is ideal (we recommend the Dr Spiller Jojoba Peeling Cream for all skin types. It contains micro beads made from dissolvable wax so it won’t harm the environment and the fishies won’t eat them and die.) Avoid pore clogging products – choose products that say “non-comedogenic” on the label

Avoid products that stimulate extra oil production – cleansers/soaps/alcohol containing products that ‘strip’ your skin leaving it dry and irritated will only increase the amount of oil your skin makes (See Dr Spiller…)
Products including a mild salicylic acid exfoliate the skin and unclog the pores which may help to improve skin texture

Wear Sunscreen

Improve pore function with prescription retinoids (e.g. Retin-A)

Laser Rejuvenation to stimulate collagen production and improve texture: We recommend a mild fractionated treatment that penetrates deeply = the Resurfx Resurfx can resurface damaged skin on the face, neck, chest, hands, and other areas, to reveal younger, more refreshed skin, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, scars and brown age spots. The treatment is quick, and usually has minimal associated discomfort.
