How to Say Goodbye to a Patchy Beard for Good

Those awkward gaps in your beard and in between your moustache and chin strap can be frustrating but they certainly don’t need to be permanent. While a patchy beard is nothing to worry about, a full, thick beard is the dream.

From diet and stress to hormonal imbalances and fungal infections, there are a number of reasons why facial hair tends to grow unevenly. Even dental issues and underlying health conditions linked to your autoimmune system can cause sporadic growth.

If you’ve always had a patchy beard, chances are, it’s linked to your genetics. If the hair loss is new, however, it might be time to seek the advice and assistance of a professional.

THREE WAYS TO FINALLY GROW A THICKER BEARD

Option 1: Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

Platelet rich plasma therapy, or PRP, is a treatment that uses the patient’s own blood to address a patchy beard. PRP treatments are minimally invasive and produce gradual and noticeable results.

The treatment helps stimulate stem cells in the area and trigger healthy hair growth and starts with a blood withdrawal. Once a small sample of blood has been withdrawn, it is placed in a device called a centrifuge, which separates the red blood cells from the plasma and growth factors in the blood. Once the plasma and growth factors are injected into key areas of the face and jaw, it activates a rejuvenation process that stimulates the hair follicles.

No downtime is required after this treatment and you are free to resume your normal routine directly afterwards.

New hair growth can be seen in as little as two months but most patients need to wait at least five months to see a difference. Your results will continue to improve over the next year. Maintenance treatments may also be required.

Option 2: Collagen Induction Therapy

Collagen induction therapy is also commonly referred to as microneedling. During treatment, a small device is used to create multiple micro-injuries across the areas where facial hair usually grows. These micro-injuries stimulate collagen and keratin production, while also rejuvenating the cells in that area. This is due to the body’s natural response to injuries. They also ensure any beard oil or medication can penetrate and absorb into the deeper layers of the skin more efficiently.

As an added benefit, collagen induction therapy also reduces lines and wrinkles, which is why men opt to treat their entire face.

Following your collagen induction therapy treatment, there may be some mild swelling and redness for a day or two but no downtime is necessary – this would be a personal choice.

Option 3: Beard Transplantation

Beard transplantation is a surgical treatment option that’s ideal for men who have developed a patchy beard due to genetics. The surgery is straight forward but it will require some downtime. In most cases, patients will need to take a week off work and will be able to shave again after two weeks.

During the procedure, small strips of hair are removed from the back of the scalp, which is where the hair is the thickest. These hair follicles are then transplanted to the beard or sideburns in areas where there is patchy growth.

With the right aftercare, there’s no reason why there will be any scarring visible on the scalp where the donor hair was removed. Since the procedure only requires a local anaesthetic, patients are able to drive themselves home afterwards.

DEVISING A TREATMENT PLAN

Depending on the reason for the patchy facial hair growth, you may need to consider creating a more comprehensive treatment plan. This could include treating the underlying cause of the patchy growth and stimulating the hair follicles.

For example, if the issue is being caused by an underlying medical condition, your hair will be affected again even if you do manage to trigger a healthier growth cycle again. Other men may need to pair the above treatments with hair loss medication or topical products.

Regardless of the treatment options you decide on, it’s important to find a reputable clinic to assist you. Having a professional to assist you means you will improve your results and ensure you’re choosing treatments that are right for you.

You may have come across a number of treatment options that you can try at home, including microneedling. However, you can end up damaging your skin should you use this device or any specialised products incorrectly.
